Wait before you help: the first step in fading prompts
When your child can almost do something on their own, it’s natural to jump in and help.
Our free prompt card for families and teachers starts here: ask once, then wait. Give them a few seconds to try.
If they don’t, give the smallest help you can. A point. A look toward the right thing. Only add more if they still need it.
The goal is for your help to fade away, not to stay.
This week, pick one thing they can almost do, and count to three before you step in, or a little longer if your child usually needs more time. One exception: anything about safety. There, help right away.
Our free prompt card has the whole ladder. Get it here: special-learning.com/free-resources/prompt-hierarchy-card
